Maidenhead United have charged up to sixth in the National League South table off the back of a memorable 4-0 victory over Bath City at Twerton Park this evening (Tuesday).

The Romans went into this evening’s fixture a point and a few places above Alan Devonshire’s Magpies, but the visitors have been finding their feet back at step 2 in recent weeks with victories over Horsham at home and Dover Athletic away.

There was further good news before kick-off with the news that defender Miles Welch-Hayes had signed for the Magpies on a permanent deal. Like Manny Onariase, Welch-Hayes had impressed for the club while on loan in the National League last season, making 35 appearances.

He went straight into the squad for the game and was named on the bench.

They followed up Saturday’s 2-1 victory at the Crabble with their most complete performance so far, taking control against the Romans with three goals before the interval.

The night got off to the perfect start with the visitors taking the lead after only a minute. Kane Ferdinand delivered a dangerous cross into the area which Bath’s Jack Batten inadvertently headed into his own net under pressure from Josh Umerah.

There was no let up from the Magpies with Jordon Ragguette delivering another teasing ball into the area that just evaded Umerah in the 11th minute.

Their second goal arrived in the 24th minute with Josh Popoola timing his run to perfection to slide home another great ball from Ragguette.

Bath were now all at sea and Liam Dulson was the next player to be threaded through on goal by Matt Robinson just before the half-hour mark. He checked inside his marker and got his shot away, but Harvey Wiles-Richards managed to block the attempt with his foot.

The Romans survived the let off but not for very long, with Dulson making amends in the 36th minute. Taking his shot early he buried the ball into the bottom corner of the net to make it 3-0.

With defence having hardly been troubled in the first half, the Magpies had all but wrapped up the three points before half-time, however, for good measure they added a fourth in the 52nd minute.

Ragguette was again the architect, swinging in another cross that Bath failed to deal with. The half-cleared ball fell for Popoola on the edge of the area, and he slotted the ball into the far corner.

The result was slightly soured by an injury to captain Will de Havilland who was forced from the field and replaced by Ryan Bartley in the 57th minute.

Jayden Mitchell-Lawson fired a shot narrowly wide of the post as Maidenhead went in search of a fifth goal to match the five goals they got at Twerton Park in their promotion season back in 2017. Umerah also saw a decent chance deflected behind for a corner.

Welch-Hayes came on to make his second debut for the club in the 78th minute, with Mitchell-Lawson departing, while new signing Kai Yearn came on again in the closing minutes for Umerah, having done a similar job in Saturday’s 2-1 win at Dover.

The Magpies will be looking to maintain this run of form when they host Chelmsford City on Saturday.

The Clarets also have 11 points from their first seven matches but were brought down to earth by Monday evening’s 5-2 defeat at home to Farnborough.

They sit ninth in the table.

Slough Town 3, Chippenham Town 2

After successive 1-1 draws, Slough Town got back to winning ways with a 3-2 success over Chippenham Town at Arbour Park this evening (Tuesday).

Former Flackwell Heath striker Wiktor Makowski netted their winner in the 76th minute, showing excellent footwork on the edge of the box to weave past his man and fire a low shot into the bottom corner.

This was far from plain sailing for the Rebels, however. They took the lead after only five minutes with Makowski putting the ball across for Jordan Greenidge to stab home.

Chippenham levelled within five minutes through Jac Poffley and went on to take the lead in the 36th minute when Owen-Evans found the back of the net.

However, in first half stoppage time Scott Davies’s side dragged themselves level when Ruben Bartlett-Antwi clinically swept the ball home from inside the area.

But for some last-ditch defending from Davies and Peter Ojemen, the Rebels might have fallen behind in the second half, but Makowski got them back in front in the 76th minute and the hosts held on through nine minutes of stoppage time to secure their second win of the season.

They are also now unbeaten in four league matches heading into Saturday’s trip to Torquay United. They move up to 15th in the table on nine points in what looks like being an incredibly competitive division once again.

Torquay slipped to seventh this evening after being held to a 2-2 draw by Hampton & Richmond Borough.
