Joy and unity at Pakistan Independence Day celebration for Slough

The Pakistani community in Slough celebrated the Pakistan Independence Day in Chalvey this week – honouring the men and women who fought for the country’s freedom.

Pakistan emerged as a sovereign state on August 14, 1947. This is the 78th anniversary of that event.

It also takes place within South Asian Heritage Month (mid-July to mid-August).

The Pakistan Welfare Association (PWA) in Chalvey celebrated the day with a community gathering, featuring food, public speakers, celebratory decorations in the colours of the Pakistan flag and joyful entertainment for youngsters, including a bouncy castle.

The celebration sought to honour the nation's ‘rich history and cultural diversity’ and ‘the brave men and women who fought for our freedom,’ said Shaida Akbar from the PWA.

Pakistan Welfare Slough ‘strives to build a community where everyone feels valued and supported’ and is ‘committed to empowering our community through initiatives promoting unity, faith, and discipline.’

Shaida said: “As we reflect on our nation's journey, let's work together to overcome challenges and build a brighter future.

“Let's pray for peace in Kashmir, Palestine, and Ukraine and other conflict-affected regions.”
