The spirit of determination, teamwork and joy was alive and thriving at Dorney Lake on Saturday at the ninth annual Superhero Tri.
Powered by Marvel, the world’s only grassroots disability sports event drew close to 5,000 participants of all ages and abilities, who travelled from as far as South Africa to take part.
The challenge featured the classic three stages of swim, cycle and push/run, with every competitor cheered on by family and friends.
Superhero action stretched beyond the triathlon itself.
The Marvel Avengers Training Initiative encouraged children and adults alike to unleash their inner superheroes, while a lively wheelchair basketball showcase wowed audiences.
The Berkshire Banshees, the region’s wheelchair rugby team, delivered both training sessions and a match, adding to the festival feel of the day.
For many families, it was an experience that went beyond sport.
Jayne Armstrong, mother to 14-year-old twins Caleb and Callistus, who both have cerebral palsy, said:
“There’s something magical when you put together a team of mixed abilities and everyone supports each other round the course and crosses the finish line together.”
Making their debuts at Dorney Lake were Paralympic, World and European table tennis champion Will Bayley, alongside Paralympic, World, European and Commonwealth swimming champion Maisie Summers-Newton MBE.
One of the highlights of the day came during the Golden Caping Ceremony.
Hosted by broadcaster Clare Balding CBE, seven young superheroes were honoured with the Golden Cape, a recognition of their resilience, indomitable spirit and extraordinary fundraising efforts.
Clare Balding will present the official coverage on Channel 4 at 09.15 on August 31.
Everyday Superheroes are now being encouraged to return to Dorney Lake for the Superhero Series winter event, Winter Wonderwheels, where participants can walk, wheel or run distances of 1km, 5km or 10km around the lakeside setting.
Reflecting on the event’s growth and appeal, Sophia Warner, Paralympian and founder of the Superhero Tri said: “Every year I’m inspired by the effort people put into shaping their team, sourcing supportive gadgets and pulling together to get round the course.”
From first timers to returning superheroes, the event proved that the Superhero Tri is not about finishing first, but about crossing the finish line together and celebrating the everyday excellence that shines in everyone.
