Major £750,000 Thames Water upgrade for 'stronger and more resilient' pipes to start soon

Previous works on the road in July.

Dates for crucial work by Thames Water in Windsor have now been set – starting two weeks from now on Monday, September 15.

The long-awaited £750,000 water mains upgrade followed a decade of burst pipes and flooding.

Clewer Hill Road and surrounding streets have suffered repeated significant flooding in recent years due to problems with Thames Water pipes.

Repeated floods from water leaks have been ‘getting worse each year’, RBWM ward councillors previously said.

Thames Water received a public dressing-down in October for failing to fix this – after which, the company said it would be making a £750,000 investment to fix to do so.

New plastic pipes are set to be installed – and are ‘much stronger and more resilient,’ says the company.

Now Thames Water has sent out a letter announcing the dates for the works. There will be temporary traffic lights in place to manage traffic during these times.

The company’s partners will be working in phases from Monday, September 15 through to Tuesday, February 24 (2026) at the locations listed below.

  • Phase 1: Clewer Hill Road between the junctions of Perrycroft and Hatch Lane: Monday, September 15 to Friday, October 3 (4-way lights)
  • Phase 2a: Clewer Hill Road between the junctions of Ellison Close and Mayfield Drive: Monday, October 6 to Sunday, October 26 (4-way lights)
  • Phase 2b: Clewer Hill Road between the junctions of Ellison Close and Mayfield Drive (3-way lights) & Hatch Lane between the junction of Clewer Hill Road and Firs Avenue will be a road closure: Monday, November 3 to Monday, November 17
  • Phase 3a: Clewer Hill Road between the junctions of Mayfield Drive and Addington Close: Tuesday, November 18 to Friday, December 19 (2-way lights)
  • Phase 3b: Clewer Hill Road between the junctions of Mayfield Drive and Addington Close: Tuesday, January 6 to Friday, January 16 (2-way lights)
  • Phase 4: Clewer Hill Road between the junctions of Addington Close and Winkfield Road will be a road closure: Monday, January 19 to Tuesday, February 24.

Work will be going on during these dates on Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm. Weekend or night working may be required occasionally – advance notice will be given in this case.

Resident and business access will be maintained throughout, and emergency access ‘will always be prioritised.’

Thames Water has asked that people avoid parking in the work area.

There may be some noise and extra vehicle movements, the company says, but it says it will do its best to minimise this and may install sound barriers where needed.

M Group Ltd (Morrisons Water Services) will be carrying out the work on Thames Water’s behalf.

There have been some public concerns over difficulties in communication with Thames Water.

Residents have said that attempts to contact Thames Water on the phone numbers listed on its letter have not always been successful.

Thames Water has clarified that the number 0800 0093652 was mistakenly added to the letters that came through residents’ doors.

Instead, 0800 316 9800 is the 24-hour Customer Centre number. During busy periods, there may be extended waiting times, Thames Water says.

The works reference number is BB01223719.
