Popular Maidenhead Farmers' Market to celebrate 25th birthday

10:20AM, Thursday 05 September 2024

A popular farmers’ market in Maidenhead will be celebrating its 25th birthday this weekend.

The Maidenhead Farmers’ Market has been a staple in the town since its beginnings in 1999 and primarily focuses on supporting small family-run produce businesses.

The first ever market took place on September 12, 1999 at the council-owned Grove Road car park, and the authority has provided a licence for it to continue its operations from the site ever since.

Recognised as the longest-running farmers’ market in Berkshire, it was a ‘novel venture’ in the 1990s, market manager Diane Harker, who has been involved since the beginning, explained.

But farmers’ markets did rapidly catch on and multiply, first in the London area and then throughout the country, with some being run by the council and many being set up by interest groups.

The market in Maidenhead looks to support small businesses producing produce such as fish, meat, vegetables and eggs – many of whom rely on markets to stay in business.

Secondary producers – including those making cheese, gelato, bakery goods and preserves – who source their ingredients directly from local producers as much as possible are also supported by the market.

The market does not allow bought-in or imported goods, except for where there is a close family connection or fair trade.

Diane said: “It’s difficult to believe that we’ve arrived here so soon. But looking back at photos of the past markets, we’ve seen a lot of stallholders and customers who have been key to building it up and supporting it over the years.”

The market has continued over the years despite many hurdles from bad weather to foot and mouth disease restrictions and, more recently, COVID-19 lockdowns.

Taking place from 9.30am to 1pm on the second Sunday of each month, the popular market now sees more than 15 regular stalls in attendance.

Many festivities are planned for the anniversary celebrations, including a birthday cake and live entertainment.

“At the market on Sunday, we will have birthday cake, made by Celtic Organic Bakers who have been with us since the very first market and the Craigievar Ceilidh band are back, to provide the live entertainment – dancing is optional,” said Diane.

“We will also be running a special discount offer again, for everyone signed up to our customer loyalty scheme.”

Diane revealed that she is leaving her role as manager and applications are now being accepted for anyone willing to take on the running of the market.

Reflecting on her time, she said: “Though this is not a formal position, ‘job satisfaction’ has been a key factor in developing and being responsible for a project that has brought measurable benefits to many small local producers and customers over the past 25 years.

“However, the time has come to seek someone with the energy, and perhaps new ideas, to take on the role in future and might suit an active retired person looking for something different.”

Diane added: “We’re still keen to provide customer choice, especially those who care about where their food comes from and how it’s produced. But much will depend on finding someone willing to take on the running of the market to ensure it happens every month.

“Motivated applicants are invited to get in touch to find out what’s involved.”

Those interested in taking on the role of market manager can email info@maidenheadfarmersmarket.org.uk and leave a phone number.

The market is also keen to attract new stallholders.
