Cookham Dean's Gravity Grand Prix sees novel karts racing downhill.
In the public notices this week, there are several road closures across Maidenhead and surrounding parishes announced – including for the popular Gravity Grand Prix in Cookham Dean.
Church Road will be shut between its junction Spring Lane to its junction with Warners Hill and Hills Lane (a distance of about 840m) for the Cookham Dean Gravity Grand Prix.
The event sees weird and wonderful homemade karts using the power of gravity to zoom downhill in the fastest possible time – or at least win points for novelty.
Each year there are usually dozens of competitors taking part, including Cookham primary schools and community groups.
Last year’s most creative entries saw karts styled like flamingos, apple trees, an elaborately feathery chicken and a pub garden.
The road closure will be just for the day – on Sunday, September 14 from 8am to 6pm.
The diversion route for traffic is via Spring Lane, Long Lane, B4447 Cannondown Road, B4447 Maidenhead Road, Whyteladyes Lane, Dean Lane and Hills Lane.
For enquiries, contact the event organiser Mark Howarth on 07595 607995.
Maidenhead
In Maidenhead, the section of Hibbert Road by Malvern House will be closed from August 18 (12.01am) to Thursday, August 21 (11.59pm).
This is to dig ‘trial holes’ – small, strategically placed holes in the ground to investigate what is underneath. These will be used to assess the condition of a gas main.
The alternative route for vehicles is via Hibbert Road, B3028 Bray Road, Stafferton Way Link Road, Stafferton Way, A308 Braywick Road and Hibbert Road.
For more information, contact gas company Cadent on 0800 085 4478.

A closure is planned from the northern boundary of the property ‘Embers’ to the southern boundary of ‘Sundown’ for a power supply upgrade.
Works are due from Monday, August 18 (12.01am) to Friday, August 22 (11.59pm).
The alternative route will be via Moneyrow Green, B3024 Forest Green Road, A330 Ascot Road, Holyport Road and Moneyrow Green.
For more information, contact Charlotte Lane of Scottish Southern Electric (SSE) on 07425 426519.
Walthams
A section of Church Hill will be closed from the boundary of ‘New Lodge’ for 160 metres southwards.
The closure will run weekdays only from Tuesday, August 5 to Friday, September 12, between 9am and 4pm.
This is to allow for ‘essential’ boundary wall repairs.
The alternative route is via Church Hill, B3024 Hurst Lane, Waltham Road and Church Hill.
For details, contact Waltham Place Farm on 01628 825517.
Knowl Hill
Part of Knowl Hill Common, from its junction with Byeways Close to the property called Joldwyns, will be closed from Monday, August 18 (12.01am) to Friday, August 22 (11.59pm).
The works are for a new power supply.
The diversion route will be via Knowl Hill Common, A4 Bath Road and Knowl Hill Common.
Queries can once again go to SSE, on 07425 426579.
In all cases, the road is closed when signs are in place, and closures can last a maximum of 18 months without special permission from the Government to extend this further.
