Bath City 0, Slough Town 1
Slough Town are up to 15th in the National League South table, and within nine points of the play-off places, after battling for a 1-0 win at Bath City last night.
The Rebels travelled to Twerton Park with seven players unable to play due to injury and with news that their goalkeeper Adam Desbois was moving on following a seven-day approach from a National League club.
Having been pegged back late on by Kiki Oshilaja’s own goal in Saturday’s bruising 1-1 draw at home to Dover Athletic, the Rebels might have been forgiven for feeling a little deflated on their journey west.
But instead of rolling over to defeat, they rolled up their sleeves and delivered a performance of real grit, with a moment of magic from Wiktor Makowski sealing all three points late on.
Slough had two players making their debuts against Bath, with goalkeeper Alfie Marriott coming straight into the side after joining on loan from EFL side Watford FC. Defender Erion Zabeli also came into the starting lineup after sealing his move to the club late last week.
The first half was a relatively even affair, and neither team was able to carve out a host of chances.
The best of them fell to Bath in the 16th minute when a free kick from deep wasn’t cleared and a shot on the turn was expertly tipped around the post by Marriott.

Oshilaja headed over from a corner for the visitors in the 20th minute and Dan Roth played in Makowski just after the half-hour mark, but his touch let him down and the ball ran away from him with just the Bath keeper to beat. Tarik Gidaree also fired over the bar from the edge of the area after a nice passing move from the Rebels, but the first half finished goalless.
Slough’s aim continued to be slightly off as they made an improved start to the second half. Gidaree headed over from a corner in the 50th minute and Tyrique Clarke missed the chance for a second goal in as many games when he fired high and wide in the 64th minute.
The Romans kept the Rebels defence on their toes with some searching balls over the top, but generally they dealt with this very well.
Heading into the last 10 minutes it seemed Slough would have to settle for another point – which would have been their fourth in five matches – but Makowski had other ideas.
A hooked clearance from Slough’s penalty area turned into an excellent ball over the top and Makowski was on to it in a flash. He confidently burst past his marker with pace and lifted a brilliant lob over the Bath keeper to make it 1-0 in the 84th minute.
Johnny Goddard almost created a second for Slough in the 87th minute with some trickier and a cross that no one could convert. But he had more of an impact at the other end as Bath piled on the pressure late in the game searching for an equaliser.
First the hosts rattled the crossbar before Makumbi timed his challenge to perfection to stop the Romans from firing home a few moments later. Then in the dying embers of stoppage time, Goddard hooked the ball off his own goalline as the ball pinballed around in the six-yard box.

Slough are back on the road at Hornchurch on Saturday where they will surely face another stiff test against a team sitting second in the table.
